Who Is Held at the Correctional Facility vs. the Branch Jail?
The Correctional Facility (1354 N Indian Lake Road) has a design capacity of approximately 595 inmates and houses:
- County-sentenced men at low and medium custody levels
- All female inmates (both sentenced and pretrial)
The Branch Jail handles:
- All newly booked individuals regardless of gender
- Pretrial detainees (not yet convicted) who remain there while their case is pending
- First Appearance hearings (where bail is set)

How Bail Works in Volusia County
After arrest and booking in Volusia County, a defendant appears at a First Appearance hearing — typically within 24 hours — where a judge sets bail. At the hearing, the judge considers the charge, criminal history, flight risk, and community ties.
Bond Types
- Cash bond: Pay the full bail amount to the jail. If the defendant appears at all court dates, the money is returned at case resolution. Bring the full amount plus fees to the Branch Jail Booking Office.
- Surety bond (bail bondsman): A licensed bondsman posts the full bond for a non-refundable premium — typically 10% of the bond amount in Florida. The bondsman guarantees the defendant's court appearances.
- Personal recognizance (PR) bond: Release on signature alone, without payment. The judge orders this when the defendant is considered low-risk and unlikely to flee.
- No Bond: A hold with no bail set, typically for very serious charges or domestic violence cases. Requires a judge to modify the hold before release is possible.

April 2024 Policy Change: No Nighttime Releases
Effective April 29, 2024, Volusia County Correctional Facility implemented a new release policy: inmates will not be released between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The only exception is when an inmate has a responsible party present on the property who can immediately transport them off the facility's grounds.
This means that if bail is posted late at night, your loved one will be processed but held until 6:00 AM rather than released immediately. Plan accordingly if you are arranging release — either be physically present to pick them up, or post bail during daytime hours to avoid the overnight hold.
Visiting at Volusia County Correctional Facility
Visitation at the Correctional Facility is available to approved visitors. General requirements:
- You must be on the approved visitor list — inmates add approved visitors through the facility
- Valid government-issued photo ID is required for all adult visitors
- Dress code enforcement: avoid corrections-style clothing, camouflage, revealing attire, and all-white clothing (which can resemble inmate uniforms)
- No personal items may be brought into the visiting area — leave phones, bags, and wallets in your vehicle
