GettingOut by ViaPath: Tablet Messaging, Photos & Video

By , Senior Author · 2026-06-23 · 6 min read

GettingOut is the tablet-and-messaging side of ViaPath Technologies (the former GTL). While ViaPath's ConnectNetwork handles phone funding and trust deposits, GettingOut handles the conversation — text messages, photos, video clips, eCards, and video visits delivered to a facility tablet.

What you can do with GettingOut

  • Messaging — text back and forth with your loved one.
  • Photos & video clips — share pictures and short videos of everyday life.
  • eCards — celebrate birthdays and holidays.
  • Video visits — scheduled remote visitation where the facility offers it.

How to get started

  1. Download the free GettingOut app (Google Play or the App Store) or go to gettingout.com.
  2. Tap Create one here to make an account, then click the activation link in your confirmation email — your setup isn't complete until you do.
  3. Add your incarcerated loved one as a contact by following the prompts.
  4. Deposit funds in the app to pay for messages, attachments, and video visits.

The most common mix-up

Families frequently put money in the wrong ViaPath system. Remember: GettingOut is for tablet messaging and video visits; ConnectNetwork is for phone calls and trust (commissary) deposits. If you want your loved one to be able to call you or buy commissary, you need ConnectNetwork — not GettingOut.

What it costs

Messages, attachments, and video visits are priced per facility, typically per message or per minute, paid from funds you add in the app. Video calling rates are also subject to the FCC's Martha Wright-Reed caps that took effect April 6, 2026. Check the prices listed for your specific facility before funding.

Good to know

  • All messages and visits are monitored and screened.
  • Availability depends on whether the facility has deployed ViaPath tablets and enabled each feature.
  • Keep the app open and signed in to receive notifications and connect for video.
